Terms of Service
Last updated: 2026-08-26
These terms cover the Holdbound software (the single HTML file you download from https://holdbound.com/download), the website at https://holdbound.com, and the checkout where you buy a license. By downloading, using, or buying Holdbound you agree to them. If you don't agree, don't use the software.
I have tried to write these in plain language. Where a section says something in plain words, that is what I mean; there is no hidden reading.
1. What Holdbound is
Holdbound is a crypto portfolio and cost-basis tracker that runs entirely on your own computer, inside your browser. It imports exchange CSV files, matches transfers between your accounts, calculates cost basis (FIFO and average cost), shows holdings and profit/loss, and exports your data. It stores everything locally in your browser's storage and in backup files you save yourself.
It does not run on my servers. The only network calls the software makes are described in the Privacy Policy.
2. Free trial, purchase, and the update window
- Free trial. Anyone can download Holdbound and use every feature for 30 days, free, with no account and no payment details.
- Purchase (US $29, once). Buys the software outright. Every version released in the following 12 months — the update window — is licensed to you permanently: you may keep using those versions for as long as you wish, with every feature, whether or not you ever pay again.
- Renewing the update window (US $15 per year, optional). Extends the window so that versions released during the extension are also licensed to you permanently. Renewal adds twelve months to any time remaining rather than restarting it. Choosing not to renew removes nothing: it only means versions released after the window are not covered.
- Read-only mode. The software goes read-only in one case only: a free trial that ended without a purchase (and, separately, if a license is revoked under Section 3). An expired update window never causes it. In read-only mode you can still open the app, view everything, and export all of your data (CSV and JSON backup); you cannot add or edit transactions, change transfer pairings, or refresh prices until a valid key is entered.
- Prices are in US dollars and may change for future purchases; a change never affects a license you already hold.
3. License keys
- After payment you receive a license key. The key is checked by the software itself, offline; it is not tied to an online account.
- Your license is personal. You may use it on any number of your own computers and browsers. You may not sell, rent, give away, publish, or share the key, and you may not use one key for more than one person or one business.
- The license check is deliberately simple and is not copy protection. Technically capable people can bypass it. I ask you not to, and I ask you not to distribute modified copies that do. If you find the software useful, pay for it; that is what keeps it maintained.
- I may revoke a key that has been publicly shared or obtained by fraud (for example, a reversed or fraudulent payment). Revocation never deletes your data; the software simply returns to read-only mode.
4. Things you may not do
- Redistribute, resell, or bundle the software, with or without changes, or host it publicly for others to use.
- Remove or alter license checks, copyright notices, or the CoinGecko attribution.
- Use the software to do anything illegal in your jurisdiction.
- Attack, overload, or try to gain unauthorized access to the checkout, feedback, or update-check services.
Reading the code in the file to understand what it does, and modifying it for your own private use, is fine.
5. Not tax, financial, or investment advice
Holdbound does arithmetic on records you give it. It does not know your tax situation, your country's rules, or what you should buy or sell.
- Nothing in the software, on the website, in the articles, or in support emails is tax advice, accounting advice, legal advice, or investment advice.
- The software does not produce tax forms for any country. Its exports are raw material for you or your tax professional.
- The "holding-period insight" and similar features are educational views of your own data. They are not recommendations.
- Cost-basis methods, tax treatment of crypto, and reporting obligations vary by country and change over time. You are responsible for checking which method and which rules apply to you. When in doubt, ask a qualified professional.
See also the Disclaimer.
6. Your data and your responsibility for backups
Your data lives in your browser's own database (IndexedDB) on your device. I cannot see it, recover it, or restore it. Clearing browser data, switching browsers, reinstalling your operating system, or a disk failure can delete it. The software reminds you to export JSON backups; making and keeping those backups is your responsibility.
7. Accuracy
The software's results are only as good as the CSV files and manual entries you give it. Exchanges change their export formats; transfer matching uses rules that are visible and editable, but rules can still be wrong for your specific situation. Review the results. Where the software lets you override a match or a value, the override is your decision.
8. Provided "as is"
The software and the website are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. I do not promise that the software will be error-free, that any particular exchange format will keep working, or that price data from third parties will be available or correct.
Some jurisdictions do not allow excluding certain warranties; in that case the exclusion applies to the extent the law allows.
9. Limit of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, I am not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, tax penalties, missed filings, or trading losses, arising from your use of or inability to use the software or website, even if I have been told such damages are possible.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, my total liability for any claim connected with the software or these terms is limited to the amount you paid me for your license in the 12 months before the claim (or US $0 if you are using the free trial).
10. Third-party services
Price data is provided by CoinGecko under their terms and is fetched directly from your browser when you ask for a refresh. I do not control their data or availability. Crypto payments at checkout are processed on the public TRON network; I do not control the network, its fees, or confirmation times.
11. Updates
Updates are optional. The software may check https://holdbound.com for a newer version when you refresh prices and show a quiet notice; it never installs anything by itself. Each released version is a separate file that you choose to download. A version you already have keeps working as long as your browser can open it, subject to Section 2.
I may stop releasing updates, stop selling licenses, or shut down the website at any time. Licensed versions you already have continue to work offline under these terms.
12. Refunds
See the Refund Policy: 14 days, no questions asked, refunded in crypto to the address you paid from.
13. Changes to these terms
I may update these terms. The "Last updated" date at the top will change, and material changes will be noted in the changelog at https://holdbound.com. Changes apply to purchases and use after the change date. If you don't accept a change, stop using the software; an existing one-time license continues under the terms in force when you bought it.
14. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Japan, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Courts located in Japan have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute, unless consumer-protection law in your country of residence gives you a right to bring a claim at home; nothing in these terms takes that right away.
15. General
If part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect. These terms, the Privacy Policy, the Refund Policy, and the Disclaimer are the whole agreement between us about Holdbound. Failure to enforce a term is not a waiver of it.
